A New Look for the Museum
Relationships between war, the American Armed Forces and the city of San Diego
define the essential urban history off the San Diego region, and San Diego's veterans themselves
represent a major facet of that story. In the coming years the VMC proposes to establish itself
as a leading center for research, interpretation and display of topics related to the military
history of San Diego and of the critical roles veterans have played here since the time of the
Mexican War (1846-'48). In the early stages of development at the present time (Spring 2003)
are exhibits featuring the history of San Diego's veterans' organizations, the lives of
outstanding as well as more ordinary members of the region's veteran community, and a series
of traveling exhibits intended to veterans themes in the city's schools. Currently under
active development is the establishment of a historical resource center that will include a
library and reading room and digital archives.
In order to develop these projects and bring them to fruition, the VMC
will require substantial new funding, to which end the organization will seek grants from
private as well as public foundations. We will also ask our members and the general public
to take a leading role in supporting these ventures financially--please help us to make the
VMC the destination of choice for anyone who wants to learn more about San Diego's veterans
and their essential part in the building of America's Finest City!
